2017/2018 President's Report

DHBC President’s report 2018 Simon Sharwood, May 11th, 2018 I’d like to start by thanking everyone who volunteered for the club this year. Anybody want to ride the Spring Cycle? If you do write to an MP, this blog post from Labor MLC Penny Clarke is very useful: it explains how to write good letters to MPs.

Re: Portland Oregon=Bike heaven

A confession: I used to do Microsoft PR (ducks) and was on the team when they introduced what was called licensing 6 about 10 years ago. Long story short, the Microsoft community screamed at least as long and loud as VMware's and got precisely nowhere. Over many months we copped it from all sides. M...

Another piece of portland bike awesomeness - the Airport's bike assembly area. Okay it is not much more than a workstand. But at least it is there! http://desmond.yfrog.com/Himg863/scaled.php?tn=0&server=863&filename=n4qz.jpg&xsize=640&ysize=640 http://desmond.yfrog.com/Himg808/scale...

Portland Oregon=Bike heaven

I'm in Portland Oregon for 28 hours and it is bke heaven. There's a bike assembly area at the airport. Bike lanes everywhere, some on the freeway and cars have to give way to bikes at off-ramps. Light rail has bike spaces with hooks, see below. Helmets aren't compulsory. But try finding a post to lo...

Re: DHBC Criterium survey.

FWIW I reckon we could create a bit of a club calendar, and pick a weekend of the month for crits and different weekends for adventure rides.
So the first weekend of the month could be crits, the last adventure rides and a guaranteed Waterfall in-between.

One point?
Pfah!
I think I can, by rights, declare myself Club Champion
The challenge was there for all.
Only I dared to take it.
The rest of you declined to even face me.
I am, therefore, club champion.
I may at some future point defend the title.

Im at the track. I reckon it rained here less than an hour ago. It is slick, wet and has puddles on the track. The bottom corner is a mess. Birds are drinking from puddles at the start line.
I rode a lap anyway. How many points do I get?

Re: WHat to do with old tyres and tubes?

700x23 tubes make awesome ties for tomato vines. They're broad enough that they don't crush the branches but can still bind them to a stake quite tightly. I'd call a car tyre shop and see if they would take bike tyres too - car tyres are recycled under a compulsory scheme and end up as 'soft fall', ...

I've started playing with Endomondo, a web service and app that is a lot like mapmyride and garmin connect, but has a more social side to it, as you can share rides and compete with other members of the serivce. Cronulla is a nice ride in its own right. Turn left off Taren Point Road at Captain Cook Drive and keep going all the way to Kurnell. Come back, turn left at the roundabout, go for a swim and coffee at Cronulla, then return. Takes a bit longer than Waterfall all up and there's no climbing, but it is...
