Hey guys the last three days have been an absolute blast. Some great results and it was great just to see everyone out there giving it a go!!!

I have to relay the big thank yous which were given to me both by both Paul Craft & Lidcombe Auburn CC for the backing which our club gave this event. They both said how excellent it was too see so many red jerseys showing up to each event. Personally I thought it was great to see the girls out there giving it a go last night & I"m very thankful to all those people who came down to support the event at Tempe. Without the helpers this event wouldn't have happened.

Cheers Simon.

Here's a couple of pics from Dunc Grey - I really need to buy a flash for DG as there's not enough light for good action shots.

Here's a couple of pics from Dunc Grey - I really need to buy a flash for DG as there's not enough light for good action shots.
What you really need are,

1) Large aperture $$$$ lens.
2) High ISO setting on the camera.
3) Practice panning.

Most riders don't appreciate camera flashes.

Well i had a fantastic time during the 3 nights of racing. It was great fun getting to race with all the guys from the club. Still in a little bit of shock that we actually managed to pull of a win in the madison.

Thanks crafty for organising the whole thing, and simon for having the balls to ride a A grade madison with a rider whos only been on the track for less than 3 months.

Well you pulled of a win so Simon's instincts must have been spot on. It was a great race to watch - I recorded the last 3 laps on video but it doesn't seem half as exciting as watching it on the night.

I have to admit to being a little terrified before riding Dunc Grey, but every second was fantastic. Even the edgy bits. It's regrettable Jo had to lose some skin (& the poor Assos!) but I for one learnt so much. Thanks everyone for being so supportive. I can't wait to get back there!

The madison was beautiful.

Alex.
That was a great race it will stick in my mind for some time to come, I don't think I have heard Crafty quite so excited for a while, he couldn't believe that we actually were going to take out the race. I remember with about 10 laps to go him saying "Dulwich hill may actually do it!!!" Then in to final lap "Dulwich Hill are going to win!!!"

The funny thing is that the winning attack was a combination of three things, my concern about our ability to change safely at the back of the race with Alex's level of experience, my gut instinct telling me that no race can be won from the back & also the feeling that everybody was napping with a lull in the race & it was the perfect time to go.

It's funny when you think back on a race too. Attacking in a madison is so much different to a scratch race because one person attacks whilst the other maintains the speed. I knew that Alex was on 94inch gearing & I was rinding 92inch. 94 is great for maintaining speed whilst 92 is more aggressive as it can be spun easier and accellerates easier. In both attacks; the winning move and final demolition of southern cross I hit the attack and ALex maintained it well. It was a winning combination. Its funny how much thought went into that bike race.

The pro photographers all had flashes ..... even on a Nikon D3 ($8000 just for the body)

Are you sure they are using the flash for "action shots"? Given the distance, very few flashes have sufficient GN power to achieve much impact apart from close distance stuff. D3 and comparable dSLR bodies when mated with a high speed lens can maintain sufficient image quality even at high ISO settings, a quality that can't be achieved with average amateur equipment or low end dSLRs.

If you look at the real pro photographers at Olympics, you won't find them using flashes when facing a competitor in full concentration. It's a basic courtesy and requirement on photographers. Maybe things are different at the amateur level at DGV.

Absolutely sure - The guy from Action Snaps standing on the inside of the track near the start / finish line uses a flash for EVERY shot - I was in the stands on the start / finish line and you see it go off every time he takes a photo. He's using a TTL (through the lens) flash that takes account of the camera's light monitoring and adjusts the flash intensity accordingly.

Yes, it's clear from that photo of Jo at 45 deg that the photo was taken with a flash. Given the amateur status and the desire of riders to have their photo taken, I suspect there's special permission given. I would bet that you won't get that kind of flash set up at a pro event as flash can dazzle and cause riders to lose concentration and potential accidents.

All I can say is that I personally wouldn't use a flash for those shots unless there's specific permission and request. Even then, I would be very careful and consider the direction of the flash wrt rider's field of view.

TTL technology has been around since the 80s and is really nothing new these days. For a location such as DGV with even lighting, those guys are just using the flash as a fill at fractional power, and can have the camera/lens set at manual. Even with the flash, they would still primarily depend on a fast lens, high ISO and suitable panning, or Jo in the background would be markedly darkened. There's no way a single camera mounted flash can light up the background in that photo. So don't over-expect what you can achieve with a supplemental camera mounted flash. For good action photos, nothing beats a fast lens and good panning technique.

I agree totally with you here Weiyun, and was very surprised to see the pro's all using flashes both times I've been to DGV (maybe that's why the other girls in the shot are all wearing sunglasses!!). I just don't have the $$ for a pro setup so I need to get by with less. My lens is a Nikkor 18-200 F3.5 on a Nikon D90 body and I will learn how to up the ISO. Agree I need to learn to pan correctly and that will only come with time. Meanwhile, I think I can risk the flash (after I buy one in the USA in 2 weeks time) at club meets to take piccies of DHBC riders but I will ask first, although I think Adrian used a flash on the weekend with no complaints.

Your D90 is more than competent enough to handle higher ISO rated shots. Even with the variable aperture of your 18-200, you should be able to take some excellent natural light action shots. As you can see in that "pro" photo, the lighting is most unnatural given the harsh flash fill. I think you can do better with your existing equipment. The trick with panning is to have firm support in the other axes and a half decent monopod would help a great deal.

I wonder how long it will take us girls to get to the point that we actually think about a race. At this point - we are all just trying to hang on - and not get dropped, or in my case not get disqualified or crash into some one else!!

That photo with Jo in clearly was filled with a flash. Just look at the first rider and ground reflection/shadow. So Actionsnaps used flash that night.

If you are ordering any, I already ordered the photo with us 3 girls in the shot on the track. Amy is in the front you are second and I am blurred in the back ground. I thought it would be a good one to have for DHBC, so don't order that one as I will pass it on to you. The only other one I ordered was the crash photo

lol me either. Has every one noticed my one and only tactic being used?
with two to go, im on the front and its slow pace, i hit it to split them a bit, then hoping theres a gap formed, which there is, i then jump off after half a lap, and swing onto the back of them for a bit, then i sprint at after ive done time behind them :)
The reason this worked was because the three riders (well at least two of them) were forced to sprint at least a lap worth, and were worn out, so i just had to go around them :D
