Lindsay, do you reckon the club should purchase it, and embed it into some sort of perpetual trophy which is awarded every year. Obviously track related...............?

Did Lionel ride in the '56 games? I thought it was just the '52 Helsinki.

If only the '52, does this make it a fake? Or was someone running a campaign to get him to the '56?

Can you imagine Lionel sweet-talking officials from Cycling Australia to try and make it into the squad? No, neither can I.

Lionels medal was definitely in '52 although he may well have competed in the '56 games...pretty sure he did.

As for sweet talking i think you could say that Lionel let his actions on the bike do the talking....and you have to respect that.

Check out the state title results, Marickville was hammering it in the 30s', 40s' & 50s'. DH got a few titles too, imagine competing against the blokes at the end of marrickville road, that would of been something else. especially when you think about having two big clubs within walking distance. Boy those must of been the days!

Lionel was definitely riding well in 56', He was the state sprint and tandem champion & then his last medal was in 62' of what results are available...

Lionel Rode for Marrickville yeah?

My understanding is that Petersham also had a Club back in the day....it would have been pretty awesome racing at Henson Park in a massive bunch. Al tells some great storys of riding at Henson and Sydney Showground on Dirt surfaces..they are worth listening to if you get the chance.

Those were the heroic days of cycling when everybody rode...shopping bikes delivery bikes the whole thing...
on the racing side of things everbodys bikes were bog standard fixed gear track bikes and it was an amatuer sport for the millions...rather than for the millionaires.
Simplicity ...elegance...and the triumph of strength and the human will. Thats where its at!

I have much respect for Lionel - both for his former world-class track successes, and the the amount of time he currently spends helping plebs like us. He is a cornerstone of Tempe and if my attendance there and at Dunc Gray was anything like his, I'd be a much better rider.

I mean no disrespect, but am intrigued to know the truth behind the badge. A search of the Australian Olympic Committee database reports Lionel as a competitor in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics only, winning gold and silver. Listings in the Canberra Bicycle Museum website concur.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 1956 Olympics were in Melbourne, but the road race was in in Sydney's Centennial Park. I'm a bit confused about what Lionel told me about racing at Centennial Park in 1956.

We don't actually think he rode in 56' the theory is it is a promo badge which they probably distributed of all the gold medal winners from 52' to get the public excited in Melbourne before the home games... But we'll wait and see what the actual badge looks like. They seem to have made alot of those badges in that era of national sports stars. Mainly cricketers, there doesn't seem to be any other olympian badges available...

I think someone should show the badge to Lionel, and ask his opinion. Simon?

Nice transaction.

If you are seriously thinking of giving it to the club, and we use if for a trophy, don't forget to ask for reimbursement. Could be quite a nice trophy.
