What was the cause of Shaun's stack at the gates?

I think he tried to go before the machine let him go, but Shaun can correct me on that.

Monday 12/10/2009

I wasn't there, but I hear that Shaun got Bronze in the final of one of the events, something like matched sprints, sorry don't know exactly what event.

Tuesday 13/10/2009

Crazy crazy day

Alex R
Ian D
Mike Cl

Scratch Qualification 20 laps - M2
Alex R
They changed the qualification from first 12 to first 10. In the end Alex had to lunge at the line, speaking to him afterward's he was cheesed off about the qualifying and then went to see the officials to see if he made the finals, but wasn't clear. In the end the officials couldn't separate Alex and another rider and they both made it to the finals.

Scratch Qualification 20 laps - M4
Ian D
Mike Cl
This qualification was changed to the first 8. Pace was high, Peter Banard estimated afterwards average speed 46kph with some laps around 52-53kph. However apart from some riders being shedded, the bunch stayed together, with Ian and I in it. At the end we at the back of the bunch, but one rider in the bunch wasn't going to make the final, Ian was at his limits where I was still good, so I rolled Ian in the final straight - sorry Ian. If Ian had some kick left in him, I could of moved up a bit more, I didn't feel that I wouldn't make the finals, but Ian was spent, so I qualified and Ian didn't.

Team Sprint Qualification 3 laps - under 135
Mike Cl
Ian D
Mark Ferguson (Melbourne)
With Shaun C missing, Ian found Mark Ferguson, a Melbourne rider, however he was 35, so our combined ages came to 130 which moved us from over 135 to under 135. After a bit of discussion, we decided to go;
1. Mike
2. Ian
3. Mark
I was in the starting machine, while Ian and Mark were held.
I had some sort of hickup going out of the machine and lost about a second, then accelerated well, apart from the hickup I was happy with the result, I rolled and Ian was really quick, perhaps too quick as Mark blewup with about 80metres to go, however we got a time of 56.something seconds, which made us 4th fastest.

Team Sprint Final under 135 - Bronze shootout
After discussions, we decided to keep the same order, though we refined some of the tactics. I changed my start position slightly, so to use more hamstring and a little less quad. I got a good start out of the machine, my lap was around a second faster, Ian was a little slower, but that left Mark fresh and he powered to the line, 55.2 seconds a solid improvement, but alas not enough to win, so we ended up 4th.

At the end of the day we were a team thrown together with no practice or specific training and we weren't that far off the worlds best, despite giving away up to 25 years. We are dam pleased with our result.

Scratch Final - 40 laps - M4
Mike Cl
Pace was really high then 3 riders attacked off the front, 2 other riders went with them but were soon dropped. We worked together, but they just got further and further away and then they lapped the entire field. I said that the heat was quick, but we were going quicker in the final and despite this those 3 riders lapped us. In the end I was racing with a group of riders for 4th when we were ordered off the track, leaving those 3 riders to race for the medals. Crazy crazy crazy.

Scratch Final - 40 laps - M2
Alex R
From what I saw, the pace got hammered early on but it stayed as one group, Alex looked stressed for a while and then looked good. Then an attack happened and there was a split of 3 riders with Alex caught in no mans land, Alex burnt a lot of energy, while one strong rider went across the gap, then there was a response from a group of 4 riders including Comptuer and Brett Fenton, but as Alex had burnt himself he wasn't able to tack on and ended at the back bunch. Eventually that bunch was ordered off.

Conclusion
Well that ends the track portion of the World Masters Games, I think I speak for all of us when I say that its being a huge experience.

Coming up tomorrow is the Crit heats, Alex R at Dunc Gray Crit, while Ian D and I are at Lansdowne.

I hear David's bike was under the UCI weight restriction and had to tie a spanner to it?

Correct, he had to add 100gms, so he cable tied his spanner to the underneath of the seat
