Next Fast RNP Ride - 17th January - Audley In
I think I'm going to back out again.
I went for a ride this morning with Renegade, and I could only manage the B Group, and I struggled at that. I was completely shattered by the time I got home.
I might get out tomorrow morning, but I will only do the standard Waterfall Ride (probably with the middies) if I do anything at all.

BTW, thanks for the interesting ride today up north. Loved it. Renegade B is pretty good ride without killing oneself. I'll give A a try when I am more familiar with the route.

There are some inconsistencies b/n the two. The grades shown aren't mirror images of each other.

I did a bit of editing in GIMP to get them one above the other, but that is about it.

Just wanted to thank James, Christian and Julian for what was a very enjoyable ride (race?) through the park yesterday.
A special congradulations goes to Julian, who I must say is a brilliant climber. Give him a couple of years more training and there will be no one in the club who can stay with him.

Joined the RNP group for the way down. It was just Julian and one new rider when I got there and they didn't see the post. We were joined by Fred, Matt, George and Eddie along the way and shame that I had to turn back at Engadine to get back home on time. A lovely morning for riding!

Had a flat on the way in just as I got off the M5, and it was panic from there onwards to try and make it to Mazza's on time. After realising it was impossible, Eddie and George led the way through some short cuts and we joined the group just before the Bridge.
An impressive sight I must admit, that sea of red at Sutherland servo at 8:30 am. Hopefully, some will start thinking about defecting to RNP ride.

Despite the RNP Road Works, this ride is still on tomorrow morning (weather dependent).

I rode in the opposite direction this morning, I checked out the road, and while there were unpaved sections, they were all hard packed dirt, so it was actually as smooth or smoother than the asphalt. There was a downhill section where I was comfortably over 40km/hr with no issues on the road surface.
According to the signs, the road works are expected to be finished on the 1/5, so we should be fine for next weeks ride.

Small turn out this morning, just Julian, Geoff and myself.
As it turned out, the finish on the road works have been delayed by a fortnight, and they aren't expected to be finished until 15th May. When I saw the sign near the Audley Entrance, we had a quick meeting and a new route was planned and decided on.
We dropped into Audley, climbed Artillery Hill, turned around and then rode back to the Highway.
We then headed for Waterfall with the intention of descending the Waterfall Hill and climbing back out. Geoff decided to drop back, and Julian and I were caught by the Fasties bunch at Heathcote Rd.
Extra Kudos goes to Tim who descended and climbed out with us, on his fixie with 73" inch gearing. He wasn't that far behind Julian and I and about 30 seconds of that was time that he lost on the descent.
Tim left us at Dolls Point, and Julian was starting to suffer by this stage. So again, well done to Julian on staying with it for as long as he did. I hope that you managed to get home and you weren't too wiped out for the rest of the day.
If the road works are extended again, it may be worthwhile to do a Bundeena loop on the 17th. I am hoping that they will get them finished this time.

James and I discussed RNP slowies this morning, the proposal is that RNP slowies go down Waterfall hill, then up to the Gary beach sign, then uturn back down and go back up Waterfall hill.Sounds like there won't be a regular Slowies RNP next Sun then.
The added advantage is anyone who wants to try one of the RNP hills but doesn't feel confident to do the entire park can go down Waterfall hill, turn around and go back up, so just doing one hill.
Bad luck to Julian who missed me at the shop this morning, set of chasing, but it just wasn't to be.

Heard on the radio, a motorcyclist crashed into the rock face at Flat Rock Creek in RNP.

We were talking about the road quality on Saturday, one theory is that they deliberately made the road surface rough to try and slow the bikes down. That came undone when they had to hot mix the corners of that section because it was getting torn apart.
I know that on the first corner past the Bundeena Turnoff when heading north that there is yellow paint on the road to indicate that a rider failed to negotiate the corner. Always a wake up call.

Would be interesting if police have a speed camera set up on that loop. It sure will catch a good number of speeders.
And would be long overdue. Same applies to the area between Kiama and Jamberoo & Macquarie Passes. Was passed by the same crotch rocket wanker three times on a two km stretch of road as he reached a junction, turned around and repeated it. Each time in excess of 150km/h. No wonder they are called organ donors.

10-12km/hr up that hill is pretty solid. That is about what I manage to do.
I also know that hill so, I know where the top is, it is pretty soul destroying as you tend to see a corner approaching thinking that it is the top, only to find that it turns and keeps going, and it does it about three times.

I think we commonly call that the Artillary Hill climb.
I am surprised you didn't complain about the Waterfall climb in your Audley-Waterfall loop. The top of that climb hits 12%.

I think that the difference between those two hills is they way they hit 12%.
Waterfall will hit it near the top for a short distance, while Artillery Hill just stays there for about it's entire length. I know that when I do the loop that way that I feel that the end of the Waterfall hill is about the same as Artillery.

Thought I'd drop a note to thank James for the ride through RNP, especially the waiting at the top of the climbs and all the hard work out the front.

Glad you enjoyed the ride, it was a good work out for me, so I had a lot of fun as well. I wasn't functioning the best at Unicycle Hockey this week, but it was still a good game.
You will have to come along at the beginning of December for the other Direction.

If I am in town and I have recovered from today's ride, I'll be sure to avoid it like the plague:)
On the way home I managed to break a spoke. Luck was with me as I did it right outside a bike shop.

Calling off the budgy smuggler ride. There's a Bondi to Bronte 2.4km swim that Jules and I are doing on Sunday morning. I am keen to do RNP ride on Saturday instead. Any takers? James, you want to increase your kms for the year iniit?
If no takers, then I will do the Audley climb polka dot jersey challenge I talked about. That is climbing the Audley climb five times without any break makes you eligible to wear polka dot jersey to the club rides. Too easy!

Are you on bad marijuana or wot? I say, let me attempt it first, and if I manage to do it, I will share the G-unit data on the forum. Then we can see wot speed I did it at.
Stop making excuses! It's 20km/h up those 5 hill repeats or not worthy of the polkadot. We have to have some real standards for the club.20km/hr?

I climbed it 5 times and descended it 4 times. That means, my overrall speed = (1.5 x 5 + 1.5 x 4)/(40/60) = 20.25km/hr

Instead it would give recovery time, and beat the purpose of attempting it without a break. I took a u-turn from the crust few meters after "Watch out for trucks" sign at the top of the hill.
2) I plotted the elevation on mapmyride.com ... dont know why it thinks it is 500m elevation.
3) Typo, 1.5km descend. Calculation of speed is based on 1.5k descend and not 2.5km.
There were some motorcyclists chilling out at the creek. When the saw me go up and down that climb. They had a strange look on their faces when they saw me go up and down that hill. I think they couldnt guess why I was doing it. I was thinking the same in my third attempt up hill.

Ok, so you were on the correct climb and good job on the 20km/h average. Although the original rule was that you can't go below 20km/h at any point along the ride, you'll receive an exemption for being the leader in this challenge and we won't give you a hard time for wearing a polkadot jersey.Thanks Weiyun!

MapMyRide and most other online mapping services are notoriously inaccurate with their elevation data. Use with care.

How much interest is there in the club for these rides to continue? I know that I haven't been there for the last couple of rides, but it has felt that most of the time there is usually only 1 or 2 other riders who are doing these.

James, I think it is a very valuable hard core training option for the club and I can say that I certainly have benefited through it. The hard part for me is the earlier start (due to my distance) but would certainly love to do more of it. Otherwise I understand that young Julian has been an enthusiastic participant.

I love these rides, and will be doing more of them through RNP (...extending up to wollong0ong/buli pass in the coming couple of months). It is fantastic to have James on these rides as he gets us to push it harder, but I understand he can't be burdened with these rides.

James, I've heard the odd comment from middie riders that they would love to do it, but its a bit too fast, so one suggestion is to make the Waterfall in Audley out ride a middie ride and leave the other one as it is
T'was a great ride and a perfect day to be riding through the RNP. Pleased someone turned up as I wouldn't have known where to go
I can't understand why more people wouldn't want to do this ride. Certainly much more scenic and traffic free than riding down the freeway to Waterfall and back.
Fingers crossed it'll put us in good shape for this weekend's Alpine Classic. Gulp....

Irrespective of whether James would come back to run this ride, I'd like to say a big thanks to his commitment to this ride over the last few years. James' extensive knowledge of the routes/climbs and general cycling matters was second to none. Through James' encouragements and support, I learnt to tackle those RNP hills with greater confidence. Your regular absence would be greatly missed and is a loss to the club.
