Distances, Big Distances
I was thinking on the way into work this morning. Strange I know, but occasionally a few neurons do fire in my skull.
One of the women on the Territory Tour did an extra couple of k's one day to break 200km in one day, I commented to her that despite the large number of hard core riders, not that many go out and do over 200km. So, who here has done what? I thought about doing a system like Mike with his flat tyre comp, so here are the categories.
150km+
160km+
200km+
250km+
300km+
320km+
The reason for 160 and 320 is that they are the imperial century (100 miles) and imperial double century.
For me, I have cracked the 250km mark, I did that last year on the Rock Ride, 256km. A very long day in the saddle.
So, I'll get it started

Do l get extra points for 200km (Alpine Classic 2008) riding a hybrid at ~5kg heavier than my road bike? It took lots of energy to push the hybrid up those hills because l hardly stopped eating for 3 days
Also 165km BikeNorth Challenge (hybrid), 200km (Alpine Classic 2009) on road bike,180km Gong 'n' back.

If we are going to organise 300, lets add an extra bit in there and do 320km, then we have all done the imperial double century.

330km, about 12 hours of riding at 27.5km/hr, about 16 hours of riding including breaks.
The plan is to start early Saturday morning from Marrickville, and spend the night at Taree, returning on Sunday train. Any takers?

It's closer to 322km (321.8km to be exact)
330 vs 322, 2.5% error. Calibrate your bike computer or just stop riding a wavy path.
Taree is a bit uninspiring though. Plus i'm not sure about how busy that route would be. Anyway, i can't leave jimmy on 250km alone.

HA! double century! turns out my friend lives 40 or so km from centre of canbera?! seriously?! and at the top of a hill! but yeah, first 200 was easy as, next 80 was hard as head wind, last 40 was getting slower and slower! especially lost in canbera. But yeah, i didnt even realise there was a category for 320> and i have now tested the theory of touring with a bag instead of panniers, and yes every one was right, it hurts, to eh==the extent tht=at ya have to stop every so often for it.

300 km in an Audax ride in WA in about 1992. We started at 6 pm to avoid the heat, rode the 300 in 12 h to finish at 6 the next morning. At one point a roo bounced through the bunch without hitting anyone.
This year I did a couple of 200 Audax and will do the Alpine Classic (210 km) in Jan 2010.
If you are looking for routes for long rides (200, 300, 400 km) the Audax website has many. http://www.audax.org.au/public/
Long-long rides are what Audax is all about. Check out the Paris-Brest-Paris, this has always been one of my cycling goals.

It's funny, but I never thought about it before this thread. And when I did, I couldn't say what my longest ride had been, or how long it was. I remember an epic day with Toff and Adrian once (last Australia day perhaps) that saw us start off from Mick Mazza's with the plan of doing the 3 gorges, but having far too much fun and wandering far afield. We eventually ended up in Brooklyn. But I didn't even have a computer on my bike, so never knew the stats.
Now I can say it with certainty: I cracked 200 in a day! And I did it in style, if I don't say so myself. The Alpine Classic. Loads of climbing, loads of fun. Still don't know what I did with those 12 litres of water though...

awww man, i just noticed you can put a number next to the distance you have done it morethan once, but only if youve reached your max more than once i think g etc must be in the 5 or so mark for the 200? ive done a few 200 plus rides, and any one thats done the grafton has done one that deserves a 220 with a star, as its a hard ride, and i think if it has hills that are massive, like a brite stage of touring etc hmmnnnnn but yeah, id definately say that the grafton 200 must be worth some thing, and the penny century too, as every one gets a knee injury in it! but yeah, ive done multiple amounts of other distances, but cant add them in maybe we need more room for us all to add all our distances in, im actually particularly proud of some of my waterfall rides too, so would like to add a few numbers for my 160's and my 80s... hmmnnnnn

Your choiceI'm not sure about putting the number of times you've done the distance on the list. Its not impressive to have done 160km more then once, think fixie century, penny century, a long day on tour.
i noticed sputnik didnt add his in, and i thought all the numbers deserved attention.

my recommendation for the table, as it seems that this is just a table showing our top distance, but feel free to copy and paste a different one

James' thread, James' decision
Considering the way that this thread has now become a sticky, I am not entirely sure that it is "my thread".
My thoughts are though (and they are only thoughts), is that the table shows the highest distance that you have done. I have broken 200km on several occasions, and I have done 240km, but my biggest daily distance is 256km, so I appear once in the list for the 250km+. If you appear more than once, then I think that it gets confusing. If you want to list my rides over over 100km, then for me it would be 254, for over 150, then it drops to a mere 21.
Basically, I put this thread up so that people had somewhere to boast about their biggest daily distance, I think that each person should appear in the list once, while I recognise the Grafton is hard race, I think that if that is your biggest distance, then you should just appear in the 200, but feel free to annotate that it was in the Grafton. The distance markers that I set originally were there because I felt that they were significant. I started it at 150km, as it is a fair way, and to a lot of riders, it would represent 5 hours on the bike, not a Sunday stroll.
I think that the grades should be
150km+
160km+ (imperial century)
200km+
250km+
300km+
320km+ (double imperial century)
and then after this we populate it as needed.

I agree, I stopped at 320km because that is the highest I thought that we would reach when I first put the post up. But I don't see the point of listing 350km, 400km, 450km, 480km... until we get to 600km.i reckon keep the 600 though, the fact that its nearly double the highest rank deserves some note
James
You need a smaller number for those who are not yet up to the bigger ones. Though I think I will use this as an excuse to go for the 150/160 sooner rather than later...
I just discovered this thread you can put me down for 320km if we're talking bragging rights.
I'm going for an Audax 400km soon so will keep you posted if anyone else is interested in having a go (although personally find that after 300km my motivation for a challenge doesn't get any higher... the Audax 600kms typically has a 1/2 way rest house for 3-5hr sleep). It is not healthy or desirable to ride more than 400km without a break.
The two long rides I'm most looking forward to are:
Fitz's Epic - 207km, Sunday 31 October 2010
http://www.ocf-fitz.com/
2011 AUDAX ALPINE CLASSIC ACE 250km, 23rd January, 2011
http://audax.org.au/public/index.php?op ... &Itemid=99
Let me know if your keen to go and we may be able to organise a group. There are shorter distances to suite everyones taste.

Adrian E, I'm planning on doing the full Fitz's epic with a mate from Canberra and I aim to tackle the Alpine challenge also so I'm keen to be part of any group that trains and heads down for either of these events. The 400km and 600km distances will be beyond me for a long while yet .

As I started the thread, I should probably answer it.What's the definition of the time period to complete?
I feel that it is basically as one ride. Now stopping for a break is acceptable, but it is basically one continuous ride. In my mind, stopping for a break where you either a) sleep, or b) get out of your cycling kit is basically the end of the ride.
In my case, the 250km ride was done in a single day, but I did stop several times for a food break and a breather.
James
Yeah the only time I'd say you could probably add days in, is if its some crazy audax ride with short breaks for maybe a couple of hours in the day to sleep etc, but you spend the majority on the bike for maybe 600km in 2 days, with 3 hours sleep or some thing, riding all night.
Based on that definition, there's room for another list - the longest continuous ride (without any type of breaks). As I started the thread, I should probably answer it.

not really a one day thing but a huge distance for me.
i completed 10 000k on my fixie!
it took form jan 17, 2010-oct 27, 2010. besides a trip to waterfall, the fixie century and a few weeks of slowies it was all on my day to day commute. WOOT!
