Yes, it was quite demanding in terms of private time. Yesterday's ride is a one off, won't likely be repeated till next year.I'm a bit time poor at the moment so I couldn't really afford to take myself out for a whole day.
Adventure Train'n Ride 5.45am 2nd Sun Jun 13 - Stanwell Tops
But a great day by any measure Weyun. Thanks to you and Mike - and Peter with his traditional navigation system. It is a great thing to claim a whole day for yourself, even tho' it got a bit masochistic at times!
Mike did a clanking good job riding around the highlands with a loose casette most of the day.
I drank eight litres of water, three cokes and an apple juice.
The company was great, the breakfast location was a gem find and there's a particular dog that I'm going to have to sort out at some stage while he's still got enough legs to stand on!
While this ride may be a once a year effort like The Fixie Century, it may be a good recipe for the Adventure Ride Series. Find a nice breakfast location in the country, catch the train somewhere close, have breakfast, ride around a bit then catch the train back (then just split for home). So much nicer than city riding!

Many thanks for all your efforts in organising the ride.
Nice change from the usual Waterfall loop.
Experience of the day: Watching DHBC riders running the gaunlet of the three legged dog and his friends.
Count me in for next time.

Weiyum and Mike, thank you for organising a fantastic ride, and thanks to everyone on the ride for your great company, it was long with lots of hills and some fast downhills, fun looking at the dogs on their pursuit of the two wheel riders, fantastic views, a day well spend, thank you
You are incredibly strong these days. Riding with you up those hills was too much pain for me......it was long with lots of hills and some fast downhills, fun looking at the dogs on their pursuit of the two wheel riders, fantastic views, a day well spend, thank you
Yes, the dog pack episode was absolutely hilarious. Note that we were barked and chased by a number of packs along the route but all small dogs. Should we search for a route that has german shepherd or bull terriors?
Thanks Weiyun & Mike for plotting the course and keeping us all on track for the days ride.
It was great to rendezvous at Thirlmere to intercpet the peleton. On advice from the locals; post Smeaton Grange Crit, I drove to Camden and parked at Rotary Park. I then headed for Picton knowing that Razorback Hill was out there somewhere. Start of incline, not too steep but never ending, anyway I knew I'd ridden up it when I saw the sign on top stating it was the location of the 1979 trucking blockade of Sydney. http://www.smh.com.au/national/truckies ... -ll09.html Going down the other side was nice.
None of the 4 persons I questioned on arriving in Thirlmere as to the direction of Nattai could give me an answer. The bloke at the bottleo grunted and didn't speak. The two teenagers called their Mum and she didn't know, and the 4th was not from the area. Anyway you guys arrived from the west by one of 2 roads entering the town.
Its a real achievement for all riders to complete so many Kms in a day, hilly and it was a pretty hot day to boot.
Once again thanks for the ride and organizing it. Fantastic photos of Lake Burragorang

Thanks for organising a great day. Thanks to everyone else for makeing the whole day so enjoyable.
The unanswered question is why are there so many tree legged dogs in that area!?

Thanks Weiyun, Mike and everyone else. It really was a good day out, although a bit on the long side.
If you do find a ride with large dogs, please let me know so I can avoid it. Your average german shepherd is probably bigger than me.
Here's a couple more photos to add.
Behind is the new razorback - one frequented by P plate drivers and maniacs. The sign points to the road less travelled, mostly because of the 2km up hill dirt bit. However, much better to go up this, than down.
I'm sure there are good suggestions out there for a suitable collective noun for Michaels. Here's four of them, waiting, hoping for a bus that never came.

This is what really happened. The story of "Lucky".
"Lucky" is an intense three legged short arsed dog that has been trained by The Torture Twins - Weiyun and Mike.
Trained to hunt down and hassle any cyclist wearing a Touch Of Red.
For over 160 kilometres.
"Lucky" had a busy day. He was everywhere on Sunday.
The Torture Twins had plotted every uphill within a hundred kilometre radius of Picton. And put them all in a route that would give "Lucky" a sporting chance against us in the Red Jerseys.
We all did a solid job wearing out first gear, having a yack and waiting for the attacks.
The attacks of a three legged dog mind you.
On one of the only two descents of the whole day, I saw 70 kmh.
"Lucky" was there too, just out the corner of my eye. Not bad for 70 k,
and only three legs!
By then we had all worked it out.
Mike's "lockring problem".
With his clever mechanical doctoring, Mike had adapted his cassette to send out a sound signal that was inaudible to human ears.
Just right for "Lucky" though.
"Lucky" would be lying in wait, ears pricked, three paws scrabbling the ground.
Ready to have a go.
As we all were. Very enjoyable day with DHBC. Thanks for all the delicious photos.
One of the highlights for me was the speed thrills big gear blast from Yanderah to Bargo. Perfect weather, perfect tempo.
Many thanks. It was a beauty.

Many thanks to Weiyun and Mike for organising the best ride I've ever been on.
I could never have imagined riding 160k in a day and couldn't have done it without the motivation by Mike and Weiyun over those never ending hills.
Also a very special thank you to Eleri who broke wind (I mean in a nice way) for me through those headwinds on the way back.
It was a great day with great company and I can't wait for the next Adventure.

Rick, you were the star of the day, after about 80k you were doing it tough but you found inner strength and did the deed.
Me - I thought I was going to be the first casualty, when I took the wheel off to change the tube the cassette fell off. I managed to find all the parts in the long grass and put it back on without a cassette tool, but it came undone pretty quick but largely stayed in place, though I was limited to a top gear of 14T
In the end all of us but one made it all the way, the one casualty being due to loosing a screw out of the rear derailleur
What are the views on the route we took?

Finally had a chance to do a clean up of my gears... Did my cleats get chewed up by all those loose road side gravels.

Thanks Weiyun & Mike for organising a fantastic day.
It was a very enjoyable day with great company & fantastic views. I'll have to agree with Peter. The ride from Yanderah to Bargo was superb.
Looking forward to the next adventure ride.

Part of the 2009 Razorback Mountain Hill Climb Time Trial
Part of the route for the Goulburn-Sydney Cycle Classic
The course will consist of a 3.8 km climb of the northern face of the mountain on Old Razorback Road which is the final climb of the Goulburn-Sydney Cycle Classic. The race will also double as the third round of the Macarthur Club Championship although entry from all riders is welcome.
The time trial will start from the intersection of Cawdor Rd and Old Razorback Rd and conclude where Old Razorback Rd joins Mt Hercules Rd The road increases in elevation by 220 metres over the length of the course at an average gradient of 5.8%. However the final kilometre averages 10% with a maximum of 16% and this is where the race will be decided.

It goes up to 16%?
What was the peak gradient for the unsealed section? I am sure that info is available through Google search.

I'd like to echo my thanks and gratitude to Mike, Weiyun and all the guys that went out - what an achievement, it was a great day that went so smoothly and safely.
Weiyun - for someone who put such effort into the planning you keep such a straight face when telling me its only a couple more km's! I won't be playing poker with you!
Mike - It was a pleasure to suck your wheel - thanks for the mashing and motivation!

The Adventure ride is on again this Sunday and we are due to do RNP. As many of the Adventure riders did RNP last Friday, do you want to have a crack at going in at Audley, exiting at Waterfall ?

Is anyone coming this Sunday to RNP?
Pace will be similar to Joanne's, Stuart's and Geoff's RNP ride last weekend, so come along.
No one has told me which way they want to ride it, so we can decide on the way out.
See you at Mick Mazza's on Sunday at 5.45am

Yes, let's decide in the morning. Largely it'll be dictated by who actually turns up.

Hey great riding guys/gal hope you all enjoyed the challenge.
Next month, the second Sunday is Mothers day, which will make it difficult for some to ride, so I'm moving it to the third Sunday.
May 16 - Stanwell Tops Icecream . Fastie's & Middies can challenge themselves on fixies, geared bikes for everyone else.

Thanks to Weiyun and Mike for an Adventure Ride in the sunshine. A good, hard Sunday morning, with lots of encouragement and even a successful paceline on the way back.
Thanks for all the wheels!
Thanks for all the wheels!

Unfortunately there isn't any hosts available for May16th, so we moving this ride to June and putting in a Early Easties Beach ride on Sun May 9th. Stay tuned for details
Ok guys. Here's the planned route for this Sunday's Early Eastie ride. The aim is to return by 8:30 so that people can get to their Mothers Day activities. The route is not absolute as we'll adjust on the ride to ensure timely return.
The highlight of the ride is South Head. Apart from Heartbreak Hill, the dip and climb back from Watson's Bay should give those legs a bit of workout. The ride down along eastern suburb beaches and La Perouse will conclude the ride.
See you Sun 5:45am!
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/DH ... nture-Ride
PS. For the guys: Tell your SO to have a lovely sleep in till 9am and you'll serve them breakfast at 9:30am.

Thanks for the suggestions.Have you done this route before? Arden St Coogee is pretty steep - Awaba st steep (well at least sth to nth - Havent done it the other way. bikelys elevation profile suggests its as steep either way....)
Albion, fern and mount is a less steep option through coogee. Or stay up high and go through randwick.....
This is my easts hills loop (minus the extra vaucluse hill) refined over the last 6 months.
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/415483
I do it south to north - and it takes me around 2:30 hrs. Suggests you will be trimming your routh for a timely return.
As this is both a "training" and "adventure" ride, a few tough hills are expected and getting lost or stuck on difficult routes can be considered to be fulfilling the adventure promise.
But yes, we are trying this route for the first time and will make adjustments based on input from people like you and others with similar local knowledge. Otherwise I can see you have some nice scenic detours off the main route. Will you be joining us?
I can tell you for a fact, it isn't. Awaba Street is a leg breaker, it is 15% average from the bottom to the roundabout, and hits 20% with no problems.Arden St Coogee is pretty steep - Awaba st steep (well at least sth to nth - Havent done it the other way. bikelys elevation profile suggests its as steep either way....)
Arden St is still steep, but not that steep.
James
Thanks James. In any case, the pre-requesite for joining the ride is ability to handle a solid paced Cruiser ride (C28) and the group has done North Head without problems, so I doubt any of the Eastern Suburbs hills would stop any one.I can tell you for a fact, it isn't. Awaba Street is a leg breaker, it is 15% average from the bottom to the roundabout, and hits 20% with no problems.

BTW, Mike will be riding his fixie. So those hills are fine.

Except we are taking a shortcut thru Bronte Beach park, so not as hilly. And its not as hilly riding south north. If it became an issue, we can modify the route on the fly.
Those figures make it look worse that it really is. After last months power thru RNP (Audley in, Waterfall out) the guys/gals are gunna eat this.

Nice short tough ride, rewarded with some fabulous views of Sydney Harbour and beaches.
Note G's kilt and it was not missed by passing riders.
Watson's Bay
South Head overlooking the harbour entrance
Rushing home to Mother's Day...

Good ride everyone! Just getting warmed up when it finished and in my case, had to go home to get the lunch thing happening.
More adventure than we planned - two police incidents in the first few kms one of which one of which caused us to traverse the back streets of Enmore. It was all happening in the inner west early this morning.
A series of mechanicals/mishaps all occurred at the coldest, windiest places possible. But the hills were good and no-one had to get off. The kilt caused no end of comment. Fortunately it didn't contribute to any of the mechanicals because I had visions of it getting caught in something and either stopping the bike or being dramatically torn off. Didn't want to know what was under it!

Sorry about the flats, even new Gator Duraskins and tyre liners didn't save me. Anyway a couple of decent hills fixie conquered.
There was a suggestion we make one of the rides later in the year an eastie down and back, ie when we get to La Pa, we chuck a u'ie and do it again going north

Its a longer ride, so later than some of the others. I think we got back something like 10.30 - 11 last year
A reminder that the Adventure ride is open to riders who are already comfortable with solid Waterfall return at Cruiser's pace, and in this day and age, C28 bunch would be desired. The Stanwell Top return has quite a number of climbs and will challenge legs. It won't be a relax ride.
When there's ice cream involved, it's always a recovery.

Great ride, yeh it was cold but not over the top. Definitely one to repeat on next years calendar.
Superb ride this morning. Clear sky, light breeze, cool and without being excessively cold, made it a perfect day for hill climbs.
GeoffM made an impressive early chase of the bunch with a 30mins gap, and no wonder he was a bit pooped on the hill. Anthony showed how far he has come in less than 12 months by leading the bunch up when he was struggling last when he came on the same ride last year... And Hung can imitate that experience in due course. As for Michele... Well, the longer we rode the stronger she became. All the boys died in her wake.
Below are the group photos in front of Lawrence-Hargrave monument at Stanwell Park, with our helmets off as a mark of respect.

Reading the forum is more exciting that the World Cup match going on with the Soccoroos at the moment.....
Thankyou again Weiyun and Michael. I haven't been out to Stanwell Tops for 2 years, and now wonder why. Its one of the best rides. Hills are undulating and plenty, but no killer hills, and plenty of variety and up and down.
Distance is not too bad, and views and bushland are stunning.
Having misplaced my shoes after Dinnerville, and tearing the house apart to find them, I left 32 minutes late and decided to have a tough time trial and take a short cut up the Princes Hwy to St George Hospital, and pray for two punctures with the group ahead. And as per my cunning plan, I joined up with the group on their second puncture at Heathcote.
Would love to see this ride a more regular ride. Maybe when RNP goes in at Waterfall, one group could go to Stanwell Tops and the other through RNP?

We would like to thank you for your past participations and the fun we all had.
Cheers,
Mike "Rambo" Clement and Weiyun "2*20" Yu

I know everyone in the club appreciates the creative energy of Weiyun and Mike and some fun rides outside of the usual Waterfall run. My two favourite rides were to Narrabeen and more recently Stanwell Tops.
Thanks on. Behalf all
Thanks Weiyun and Mike for setting up and running memorable rides into new territories.
The Adventure Rides were fun and challenging and very well liked.
Chapeau!

Thanks guys. I haven't done many of the adventure training rides, but slowies RNP to Bundeena was my first trip through the park and it was certainly memorable. Mike was very patient with me as I struggled to make it up Artillery hill. He didn't even tell anyone that I had to dismount and walk part of it

It was Artillery hill...
yeah i was on the ride that vic was on i think, me and parksy came back while you lot were on the boat, it sounds like the boat was fun, so i wish i had done that! it sounds like theres a lot of fun to be had by adding non riding travelling to rides!
Thats the ride where i learnt that i could hardly see parksy in the national park while he was wearing green, hence me wearing less irish kit for rides with a lot of trees! and where the colognago seat post bent?
