Mon 3rd: Drive, Ride, Eat, Swim
On Mon 3rd Jo & I are off to Narrabeen in the car at 5:30ish to start a ride from Narrabeen Beach by 6:30. Ride will go up McCarrs Ck rd, down to Illawong Bay, Akuna Bay and back (about 60k's). Then breakfast at the cafe right next to the car park and then a swim.
if there's any interest I'll post the location of said car park.

Ok for Eleri and the "maybes" here's a link to the meeting place opposite Driftwood Cafe.
See you there.
See you there.
Awesome, the more the merrier. Be nice to do a ride and a swim before getting back to work. Hope to see you all there.Picked up a few maybes at the cafe this morning. Hung, Mike, Danny, Ian- all possible starters.
I thought the start was 6am, so pleased to see it's 6.30
I've put the ride on Map My Ride and it's only 47k's so have decided to add the West Head out n back diversion which takes it to 70k's and adds one steep hill. See you there in the car park.
This map is the longer version
Oh, of course there's nothing to stop anyone from riding out to Narrabeen of course ..... except maybe the start time.

That's exactly what I was just working out. Its 31.8k from my place and its a route I've ridden a number of timesOh, of course there's nothing to stop anyone from riding out to Narrabeen of course ..... except maybe the start time.
Tempe to Narrabeen
That would make the departure time 5.15am
Oh and I'd have to wear budge smugglers as I don't have carrying capacity for boardies
I'll put a spare towel in my car for you Mike. If there's other stuff you want to take, give me a call. That's exactly what I was just working out. Its 31.8k from my place and its a route I've ridden a number of times

It was a good day out, thanks for organising Stuart.
Cool conditions made it quite pleasant for riding. The rain masqueraded as high humidity and we didn't really get rained on properly which was good. Unexpectedly saw Victoria on the way back from West Head.
We got more than enough hills in, I was surprised to see that the total climb is greater than RNP but it didn't feel like it, although by the end I was more than done in. We all sat on the couch at breakfast looking slightly the worse for wear and a few of us were threatening to go to sleep right there and then.
Except M&M who decided to ride back and were last seen at Narrabeen wisely deciding not to do an illegal right turn
Can I go back to work now? This holiday has been exhausting.

The Garmin surprisingly confirms the elevation gain was more on this Narrabeen ride, but definitely RNP beats it hands down for steepness and overall "My legs are hurting" factor. It was a very pleasant way to end the Christmas Break. Although it did confirm how much I hate hills and the fact that I won't be doing the 200 at the Alpine. 130km here I come.We got more than enough hills in, I was surprised to see that the total climb is greater than RNP but it didn't feel like it, although by the end I was more than done in. Ha I remember someone winging about the hills
Had no idea people were heading out there... Should check here more often! Was suprised to see the sea of red. Left my place at 7am and we got 125km's in today... Although there was lots of stopping, eating, drinking, almost falling asleep in parks, eating - a bit more like touring reallyUnexpectedly saw Victoria on the way back from West Head.

What was the total climb you guys recorded, EMT & Trouty? I think there's something a bit peculiar about my new Garmin. The elevation readings seem fine, but I get what I suspect are high gradients. At the end of the day it told me we'd climbed a bit over 2100m and descended less than half of that! No matter how I do the maths, I can't work that out given we started and stopped in the same spot.
Top morning out! Thanks for organising it Stuart! I'd never done that ride before and it was beautiful.
Sorry I couldn't stay for breakky though - I ended up going straight to the office in my lycra and spending the day working in it. Serves my boss right for disregarding public holidays. Apart from the visual aspect, I couldn't have smelt great either.

With elevation corrections turned on, it says 1004 climbed and 1005 descended. Before that it said 1,150 or something.
While I was riding, the gradients were a bit all over the place, but I figure that is a combination of trees and active guessing on the run by the device. I'm sure that bit where it said I was on a gradient of 24% was probably wrong There's no report that says "highest gradient" on ride or anything like that which would be helpful but would also probably be wrong.

I agree that RNP is harder. Regardless of what the overall elevation is, the size of the individual hills in Akuna bay and West head are not as long as the RNP ones
My 500 says this:
Elevation Gain: 981 m
Elevation Loss: 980 m
Min Elevation: -6 m
Max Elevation: 185 m
Time: 02:53:59
Distance: 68.79 km (I missed the first 1.5 k's)
Avg Speed: 23.7 km/h
Avg Moving Speed: 23.8 km/h
Max Speed: 70.6 km/h
That looks about right and is a little less than RNP.
Camilla: I think there may be something screwy with your unit because even enabling map corrections (which is not actually in the device but only on-line) wouldn't account for the doubling of the height.
BTW people - all uploaded Garmin Connect rides are public i.e. can be searched for unless you change your settings from the default (which works for uploaded rides after that) or manually lock each one, which you need to do for old rides.
