Dear Members,
We are delighted to announce that our Club President, Eleri Morgan-Thomas, has been appointed to the board of Cycling Australia (CA).
This follow’s CA’s recent approach to the cycling community to replace several board seats by including a competitive interview process. CA is broadening its skill base on the board and is keen to bring in members with commercial and business experience.
Professionally, Eleri has a strong background in the development of businesses that support non-profit objectives. Eleri currently works for Mission Australia and 10 years ago was part of a small team that set up a Australia’s first bank for non-profit organisations, the Community Sector Bank. This was a joint venture with Bendigo Bank and Eleri remains a director.
Eleri joined the DHBC committee in May 2011 as Public Officer after she was approached by the DHBC executive committee. Given Eleri’s background in the development of businesses that support non-profit objectives, the committee knew Eleri would make a significant impact on the fast growing Inner West cycling club. This was even before Eleri joined Strava and stamped her name on many a hill around Marrickville, Redfern and Erskineville. With great governance skills she consulted, drafted and implemented a new club constitution and worked tirelessly on ensuring it addressed the objectives that are still considered relevant today.
In 2012, Eleri was nominated for, and successful in, being voted in as Club President. Eleri has worked tirelessly to extend the reach of the club, has improved regular communication, increased female participation and has firmly established the club on social media.
CA has big challenges ahead like most sporting bodies. It must ensure that there are effective policies and practices, along with education, to ensure performance enhancing drugs stay out of our sport. The Federal Government is tying more funding to activities which promote active and healthy living for a greater number of Australians. CA was delighted to hear about DHBC and the experience of our club is one that CA would be keen to see other clubs follow. We've experienced strong growth, we are inclusive, we have a higher proportion of women than the sport in general and a strong juniors program. We haven't forgotten racing and our track heritage and the new NRS team has impressed CA. We have a wonderful story to tell about our club and it will be great to have Eleri on the CA Board.
Attached below is the official CA announcement.
Please join the executive committee in congratulating Eleri to her new post on the Board of Cycling Australia.
Regards,
DHBC Executive Committee

The Board of Cycling Australia (CA) is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Directors to Casual Vacancies on the Board of CA in accord with Rule 39.6 of the Constitution.
Eleri Morgan Thomas (Marrickville, NSW) has been appointed to the position vacated by the resignation of Tracey Gaudry. Eleri has an extensive background in senior management and governance in the not-for-profit sector as well as considerable experience with commercial projects and in federal politics. She is very active in club administration and is a Masters racing member.
Jon Leighton (Wahroonga, NSW) has been appointed to the vacancy left by Stephen Hodge for a term through to November this year. Jon comes with considerable commercial experience and currently manages his own consulting business. He is a senior administrator in the recreational cycling sector and is a current Masters racing member.
Eleri and Jon were selected from a high calibre field of candidates in a recruitment process that began in February. They join Lisa Jacobs (Kew, Victoria) – appointed as Athletes Commission Chair (email 15/4/13) – in bringing new skills and perspective to the CA Board.
We wish them every success in their new roles with Cycling Australia
Regards,
Graham Fredericks

Well done Eleri, CA has done itself good
Thanks everyone. DHBC is a great club and it's been great to be able to talk about it and bask in the reflected glory. After all, it's everyone's efforts that help make that story.
Pretty sure the answer is "a bunch of knotty problems to try and help solve"Yeah that's great but what perks do you get? e.g. free trip to inspect how the Tour de France is administered.
