I came across a link today via Bike Snob NYC about a track riding girl called Beth who is into measuring her quads.

In a recent interview, Grégory Baugé noted that his thighs measure 69 cm.

Now Baugé's a pretty massive dude, and pretty much represents the gold standard of track cycling. So I figured I had to measure up.

I'm 64 cm! Only 5 to go before I'm in Baugé's league!!

How do you compare?

Wow! That "how to..." photo sequence is somewhat confronting, but I compare surprisingly well at 56 cms and counting...

That's awesome Huw!!!

At best best I"m only 61cms, though it is all muscle. But not to despair in the words of Beth:

"YOU'VE GOT TO EAT TO COMPETE!!!!" & I have had my KFC today...

Well, I've got puny climbers legs, i'm only at 53cm.... but it is all muscle, and i've had my body fat measured as proof. I'm 10% bodyfat, and that's measured with underwater weighing (the benefits of being the training subject at uni).

The dietry advice is good though. I wouldn't mind trying the cherry pie and ice-cream for breakfast, just need to find a source of good cherry pie!!!

Well, after a bit of googling http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/olym ... 02779.html

27inches for Hoy, or 68.58cm. When you round up, it's the same as Baugé.

Thanks for that, T-Bone. I didn't want Google to know I had looked up Chris Hoy's thighs!

On Chris Hoy and the rest of team GB cycling - normally there would be suspicion about a team that claims 7 of 11 gold medals on offer in terms of being on the juice but I haven't heard a whisper about them although there are whispers about Jamaican sprinting (running that is) after they cleaned up in the women's and men's 100m and 200m. Just a thought, not saying they are dirty just that there hasn't even been a mention of the possibility.

In truth I don't think there's any speculation about drugs because people are just over it & want to enjoy the racing. Everybody knows that cycling has a drug problem, that's a given. Whether these guys are on drugs, who knows??? But does it do any good speculating? If you sit around and speculate about the subject being a fan of the sport, then you encourage everybody else to do so also. Next you'll be starting a thread about the fact that drugs are ruining the public image of the sport & really it was probably your speculating which is encouraging others...

There's one known fact that makes the Brits superior to all other nations on the track and that has been their spending. They not only have a much larger budget for employing coaches & the like but it means that they can employ guys to train just for particular events, rather than relying on pro teams to provide them with a living. I remember speaking to one of the British riders in Copenhagen when the team was riding the heats for the team pursuit over there & I asked him how they got so perfect & he told me that all four riders train constantly for this single event (Wiggins was missing). Which actually sounded quite boring to me at the time, but after watching the Olympics and the World record get shattered is a real achievement. The Australians on the other hand come together once every four years to ride the event & hope to succeed, generally after long road seasons in which they may have just completed the Tour de France.

That's Kevin Sireau & the reason he doesn't look too happy is he's been the fastest man in the world all year but still hasn't been able to beat Hoy, at World's either. It's interesting though on the subject of thigh widths, his thighs don't look anywhere near Chris Hoy' but he is naturally faster...

GB winning so much wasnt that much of a surprise when you look at all the world cups recently etc. It was only a surprise if you only watch olympics to work out whats happening on the veledrome. I was surprised how well bayley went in his kieran heat!
What a ride!

On the subject of Chris Hoy, from this morning's SMH:

Scottish journalist to cyclist Chris Hoy, who won three golds for Britain at the Olympic Games: "In the last 24 hours everyone has been offering an opinion on Chris Hoy. But what does Chris Hoy think of Chris Hoy?"

Chris Hoy replies: "Chris Hoy thinks that the day Chris Hoy refers to Chris Hoy in the third person is the day that Chris Hoy disappears up his own arse."

Good on him!
