Time for some straps...

I think it's time we start encourage people to start investing in some straps. Or at least put good quality road pedals on their bikes, not warn out second hand road stuff. You don't have to go all the way to double straps but you should all start considering putting a single strap onto your road pedals. Last nights crash was inevitable, Chris said he was going to fix the problem as he was having major problems & unclipped last week. But didn't get around to doing anything about it & now he's had an easily avoidable stack. So i think we should aim to have all DHBC riders strapped up after they have been coming to the track for a few months....

I assume the speed plays are fine, they are new & most track enduro pros don't use straps...
Simon I'm with you 100% on this one. I'm now using the standard shimano shoe with the cleat they provide with a double strap & I reckon I could get sucked up into an alien space ship by a tracktor beam & I'd tow the bike under me as I went up into the sky. The shimano cleat fits a look pattern & are free when you buy their shoes, most shops chuck then in the bin.
I've got Theo's pedals to add a strap for him after he pulled his foot on Wednesday & did some concrete hardness testing.

Good point...although i can honestly say that keeping a decent set of cleats on my shoes and maxing out the release tension on my SPD-SLs i have never yet pulled a foot on the track...although im not the worlds most powerful sprinter or anything.
If somebody has a good detail for the attachment of a single strap to a spd-sl pedal then i will give it a crack.
Cheers

The double strap job from the world cup looks pretty secure, no doubt it had some professional mechanics on the job. The bad bean job looks good because it appears you don't have to drill the pedal which means if you stuff it up, it's not so bad.
But i would probably still go for the shimano 600 double strap job, it's more traditional. Munksy tells me he can get the cleats for nothing, bike shops get them with shoes and chuck them away. from a performance point of view i initially thought the strap on the clipless pedal was the way to got but it give you less surface area & foot movement on the axle so don't know?

Great history of pedals/straps. This might give some of you some idea of what you can do to your existing pedals

2 brakes!! Because no brakes or 1 brake causes a different sort of break that you have enough of already.

I'm use to using just the front brake already, I often brake that way.
Dropped by at Ashfield cycles, they showed me a picture of the shimano lace up shoes for $99. Didn't have any suitable pedals.

perhaps its just me, but there seems to be very little on offer in the world of shoes that are specifically for the track.
I did some googling and came across these:
Shoes

and the matching pedals

Any thoughts or other suggestions?

I've got two pairs of shoes, the shoes I ride are Carnacs which as far as I know they no longer produce and I"ve got a pair of Duegis which as far as I know don't exist anymore either. But Brownie still might have a few pairs, It depends what size your looking for...
Those shimano shoes actually look quite identical to my carnac's except the carnac's have a carbon strap. It all dependents if the sole is still enough for sprinting. I know it's only plastic but so are my Carnac's and I rode Sidi road shoes for years that weren't carbon and I don't notice any dramatic differences in the carbon verson. Having the big strap and laces is ideal for a track shoe, i think it is better than just laces and i also think it is better than two or three straps... For $99 you can't complain too much...
I use MKS RX-1 pedals, Brownie can order them in from europe. & he can get sprint double straps..

Simon,
Do the MKS RX-1 pedals use cleats?
Micheal,
The distributor for Exustar is below. I've seen many exustar pedals around so it shouldn't theoretically be difficult to get them. But I doubt they'd be getting that many orders.
Also, I came across this Keywin clipless pedals with track adaptors.
see: http://www.keywin.com/trkpage.html
And theres a discussion on how you can put a strap on speedplays here:
http://www.cycling.net.au/showthread.php?t=223255
I must admit that this searching is rather futile for me as I can only really afford to get another set of SPD-R pedals at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to hook up a strap to them!

They use the standard shimano 600 cleat I think it is, the shoes came with a carnac cleat but the shimano is much better. All it is is a bit of plastic with the standard look triangle drill pattern and has a slit down the middle of it where the back of the pedal sits in. It's very basic, they don't hold your shoe in the straps do that. They simply prevent your foot from moving back & forward...
It's exactly the same design as the cleat on these duegi shoes except the drill pattern is Look so it fits a standard road shoe..

I'm size 43.
Learsports do not have Exustar on their web site, I've looked there before.
The Shimano's are good value at $95, but considering that they will last until the style police arrest me, its worth considering other options.

I had a look at the shimano shoes today, they are a bit dorky I guess but with double straps over the top you probably wouldn't notice too much... they do look good for the job & the price...

At bikebug today the guy was saying that if you use straps, you might hurt you knee in a fall.
He also mentioned that red looks cleats are no good and you should use black look cleats.
He was suggesting speedplay track. Apart from the slight changes in the pedal design he was saying that the springs are stiffer

so there are two schools of thought here:
Have clipless pedals and you might not hurt your knee. use clips and straps and you might avoid pull out off your pedals (and crashing). Seems to me that there is no logical conclusion to this problem. To clip or not to clip, that is the question?

It's all personal preference. Guys at bike shops are usually roadies and have no real knowledge with double straps because they don't use them. When me & Tim crashed we were both wearing double straps and neither of us came near hurting our knees, when paul crashed a few friday nights ago with a strap he hurt his pelvis not his knee. I've seen a quite few crashes over the years no knee damage from memory. But one thing is sure if you had of had double straps on with them done up properly you would not have a fractured wrist nor Chris because he wouldn't have pulled his foot either, Theo wouldn't have crashed either.
So there is no knee damage but plenty of crashes which could have ALL been prevented with straps...

Yeh, thats my opinion too.
And knowing that I don't let go of the handle bars, I'm less likely to twist my body against the bike.

Toshi NJS Double Straps $99.95/Pair. These are super high-end double straps made for serious track racing. They meet the stringent NJS standards required for parts to be used in Japanese Keirin track racing.

Are these the ones you use?
From what i've read on the speedplay website, there shouldn't be any difference in the cleats (springs). This in my mind is confirmed by the fact that you can't buy specific speedplay track cleats. He was suggesting speedplay track. Apart from the slight changes in the pedal design he was saying that the springs are stiffer
Interesting idea for adding a strap to the speedplays, though i'd prefer to attach a metal loop for the strap in a similar way to the picture in that forum so there is no weakening of the strap by putting a hole through it.
There's some single Toshi straps on ebay for $30 if anyone is interested.http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TRACK-ROAD-BIKE- ... dZViewItem
In the case of injury, i believe it's very unlikely that you'll hurt your knees, mainly due to the fact that you have a solid frame between your legs which is going to prevent any ab/adduction at the knee joint, unless you have an unusual crash. You're more likely to hurt your knee in the impact with the ground, which shouldn't be very different with or without straps.

Hey Mike if your interested Brownie is talking about doing another order in the next day or two. He can get (price from a year ago don't think it has changed much):
MKS RX-1 Pedals $163
MKS Sylvan pedal $45 (don't know stock level)
Toe clips-$8 or there abouts from memory
Sprint double straps- $80 which he has 4 sets already from last order
Nitto steel track bars- $90-$95 depending on size
If your getting pedals from Al for a good price, go for it, the old stuff is probably just as a good as the new stuff as long as it's good quality. The double strap set up is old school anyway, it's only the straps which make it modern & the shoes depending on what you use....
