Legs of Steel Omnium. Riders are only permitted to ride a steel framed bike. No carbon fibre or aluminium will be permited. Racing will be in the format of a traditional omium setup, flying 200m TT, scratch race (madison), individual pusuit, points race (madison) & a kilo but with an emphasis on team events, ie madisons

Who can race: Anyone with a racing licence, this is essential for insurance. However racing will be relaxed and catering for all levels of racers, from beginners through to experienced regulars. All are wlcome!!!

What if I don't have a steel bike?: Well to start with we will try and lend you a club bike. Otherwise exceptions will be allowed as all the goals is to get everybody racing not keep strictly to the theme of the day.

***Racing subject to the booking of the velodrome and sancion from cycling nsw, which should not be a problem but yet to be confirmed.

Can I ride my Eddy Merckx if I disable the brakes? Or will the bottom bracket be too low?

Simon or Tim or Alex will correct me if I'm wrong but:

- I don't think BB height will be a problem at Tempe, unless you have crazy length cranks
- removing brakes would be the preferred option; it wouldn't take long and plenty of people there to help on the day.

That's my guess

The Merckx will be fine on the track as long as speed remains above ~20km/h. At low speeds, the bike is more vertical, which can result in pedal strike on the highly banked ends of the track. A few people ride road bikes at Dunc Grey when RAW is on, and they are fine, mainly because Dunc grey requires everyone to go faster than 25 to get grip. The Merckx has road geometry, but it's racing road geometry so the angles are somewhat track-like anyway. From memory, you use Keo pedals and these are much narrower than the platform pedals that used to cause all the problems with track racing at low speeds.

OK bad news from my side. I fell the night before last. Long story short I crashed my knee into the door frame while doing a nudie run after the shower - looking for a towel.
I've tried riding yesterday and today, no good. Hopefully I'll get time to come and watch the steel on the track.

Great fun at the Omnium, even though i was stuck in team KHS. I was stuck with a gearing of 74inches, while Tim on another KHS had 84inches, i think Simon was undergeared too.

Luckily for me the gearing didn't seem to affect too much for both Madisons, just the flying 200 and 2km pursuit.

Heaps good event! the gearing really evened it all out! pity about the relegations in the maddison but oh well.
