Best Bike for around $650

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions? For a MTB for around $650. Or am I dreaming??? Hope you can help. 
Wander in to your favourite bike shop and see what hard tails they have. Giant, Merida, Apollo, Malvern Star, GT & Mongoose all have reasonable offers in this range.
At this end spending a little more money will give you a lot more performance, especially with regard to the forks.
