Club clothing
Last night at the 100 yr birthday party we were discussing the possibility of getting some club clothing.
This could include t-shirts, which would be good for the Saturday Slowies people that don't want to shell out the $100 for a jersey as well as for the rest of us. I was also thinking of hoodies, which would be great for the cold winter nights down at the track and for any race where you want to show everyone who you ride for. We could also get some cycling caps made with a DH logo on the bottom of the visor.
The shirts and hoodies we can get made here, not so sure about the caps. I did a quick search and found a company in the USA that can do the caps with a reasonable minimum order of 25.
At this point I'd like to gauge the interest in doing this. The next step would to get the design together, do we want the new design or a retro design? Are there any graphic designers in the club? Any other suggestions?

Just to let you know guys, I'm new jersey order man. Grant handed me the job just before the baby came. I'm currently doing an order at the moment.
But in regards to skinsuites & even the possibility of knicks, I made an inquiry today. Skinsuites are going to cost approx $150 each, possibly slightly more for set up costs on any new design. We need a minimum of 10 though. Knicks will cost over $70 depending on what we are after...

Simon did Lindsay mention that place in NZ that does small order batches? In that you can get a selection of things within the batch, so for example if the minimum order was 20 units, you could get 8 pairs of gloves, 4 pairs of knicks and 4 jerseys. I think Lindsay said that did other things like water bottles.
With the T-shirt idea, I would be happy with a simple design, something like the DH symbol on the shoulders. I would want a T-shirt that looked like some sort of Holden Dealer Team fan club apparel. Just keep it simple and classy.

I think we should definitely do the hats. It has the smallest outlay. We would be selling them at $15 each, this leaves a little in it for the club. All we need to do is get the design done and send it off. Lead time is 6 - 8 weeks. This of course depends on if we think we can sell 25, which is the minimum order quantity.
Doing shirts etc has an initial cost to get the screens made, so number of colours makes a diffence. We may be able to use the same screen to do multiple garments, ie, logo in the front of shirt and jackets.
I agree we should keep the design simple, a logo, our web address and may "since 1908", or something like "riding since 1908". We may want to write "Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club" on there somewhere as well.

I'd be very keen to have a t-shirt. Especially if, as people are suggesting, it was clean & simple. Although there is a certain huge appeal to "you are passing another Saturday Slowy".
Does it cost more to get girls' ones made up too or would small mens' do the trick? I think it important, btw, that the t-shirt itself be of good quality.

Now that the pothole has been fixed and you won't be crashing there again you can wear a t-shirt keep it clean and keep the style police happy.
Although Mike prefers the Holden type , I agree with you that it should be clean and simple.
You only have to look at the Randwick jersy to see that the Sponsor name takes up most of the space and the club name is barely visible.

Actually, we have a number of potential sponsors dying to sponsor our club and get their brands on our jerseys.Although Mike prefers the Holden type , I agree with you that it should be clean and simple.

Christian, I'll have one of the caps you are planning to make.
What's the functional value of a cycling cap when we already wear a helmet +/- bandana?

Lets not let function get in the way of styleLook isn't functional.
The shirts are second on the list. Depending on the cost we may have to pre-sell some to get the screen masks made. I'm yet to find a screen printer, its on the list of things to do. We should be able to get both men's and women's shirts made.
There seems to be enough interest in the hats already so we can go ahead with this one. I will be brings the blank hat pictures down to the track on Monday night so we can work out a design, then it'll be over to our club graphic designer to do the art work. I'll get in contact with the manufacturer and work out the rest.
This is the company I found that can do it.

I agree. It would be great to get some caps. Anything to keep the sun of my balding head

Expensive, yes, but could be good for events like the next Fixie Century.
Now here's an example of a cool design t-shirt that is good enough for even the very style conscious Joanne to buy and wear !

You have commited the ultimate sin of insulting a cycling symbol of iconic status and are thus ordered to endure the torment of forty whips with a bicycle chain
In all seriousness now, I always wear a cap under my helmet.
1- It looks cool
2- It aborbs my sweat and wicks it away from my eyes, directing it towards the peak, where I can observe my efforts drip away, and count each drop as I suffer on a knee snapping climb when the need is greatest for something to distract from the pain in my limbs and the burn in my lungs;
3- It looks cool
4- It allows me to regulate body temperature. In winter it keeps me warm. In summer I douse it with water and the cooling effect is extended than without any head cover
5- It looks cool
6- It is as effective as any of the other more recent innovations that boast super-duper wicking cooling warming capabilities
7- It looks cool
8- It is a traditional piece of attire and I don it with pride
Did i mention it looks cool? I was thinking about trying to start a new fashion around wearing the cycling cap the same way people wear the baseball cap. What do you think?

It's a matter of style, the cap will give me the French cyclist look where the bandana will give you the Ninga look.
So you should have less trouble with cages pulling out in front of you.

Ok, I've got a quote from the shop.
I'd be quiet happy to go wool.
Can I get any indication of how many people would be interested in getting a cap, and if the numbers are right, I'd be happy to put an order through.
Or, we could go with the people Kristian found.
The minimum order is 10 for the 25% discount.Hi Adrian-
Thank you for your email and your interest in Walz Caps. We make many caps for cycling clubs and teams and we hope to work with you too. As for the club name, that can easily fit onto two lines if you don't mind breaking it up into Dulwich Hill (on the top line) and Bicycle Club (on the bottom line). I suppose we could squeeze the whole name on one line on the side but I think the text would be too small to see clearly.
As for pricing, we like to help out cycling teams and clubs so we offer a 25% discount on orders of 10+. For example, if you wanted the embroidered four panel cotton cap, on an order of 20, the caps would be $13.50 each. If you wanted the embroidered wool four panel, they would be $22.50 each. Prices vary depending on they style (racing stripes are more) but you get the idea. There would also be a $10 shipping charge.
Let me know if you have any further questions or if you would like to order since the club discount pricing is not available directly on our website.
Thanks.

I'm not entirely sure I want "DH" in a circle on the front of my head.
Anywhere else on my body, fine. But let's not give away one of the other interpretations of our initials so obviously!

Its only a concern if your name is Richard
Will wool be better then the synthetic material? After all, your jersey is synthetic. The woolen ones look to be embroyded, where as the synthetic ones are printed. The main difference there will be the complexity of the design, printing gives you more flexability.
What was the price on the woolen ones?
What was the price on the woolen ones?
Apparently not. Thin wool garments are similar to modern sweat wicking synthetic materials in that they all have fine fibres that function similarly. I am not sure about wool's durability and ability to maintain shape though, especially those cheap ones. It may just take one rain and your baby will have his/her first cycling cap.isn't it that a wool cap can only be worn in winter?
I'm keen to make an order through for caps soon.
I discussed the design with Simon, Tim and James and we thought that just a cotton red cap would be fine with the clubs name embroided in white on the side
see: http://www.walzcaps.com/caps_personalized_cotton.html
to get the basic idea.
As I don't have the finances to bankroll a large order, can I ask people who want caps to give me $20 for each of them. That should cover the costs of the caps with postage, and if there is any extra money, I'll be sure to put it into the club's finances. Trust me!
I'll be at slowies and on the waterfall ride this weekend, so see me then if your interested.

Can't you get the money from Coral by Cheque (speak with Lindsay)?
Now that we have some money, we can order an inventory, so long as we think we will clear out most of these items (to which you've done your homework quite well).
We need to keep our accounting fairly consistent, and its easier on you this way.
Cheers

Hi Gecko
There is the slowies ride tomorrow leaving Mazza's Bike shop at corner of Marrickville and Illawarra road Marrickville at 6,30am and going to Centennial Park and returning to Marrickville about 8.30am for coffee. Just turn up at 6.30am. There is no charge to ride with the club however if you wish to become a member there is a small joining fee. Ask for Lindsay.
There is also another ride this Saturday leaving Mazza's at 6.15am and going to Waterfall and return (85 k/m).This ride you will need a road bike as the average speed may be 28-30K/H.
On Sunday there is another ride to Waterfall return leaving at 6,30am at Mazza's.
Your welcome to attend any of the rides.
Hope to see you soon.

I just got my WalzCaps black and red-stripe wool cap in the mail. It looks pretty good. I'm tempted to wear it round the office, but I doubt whether my colleagues would really understand.
Customer service was excellent. Since I only ordered one, there was no postage charge. If you're lucky, I'll take a photo of it on my head and post here later on.

OK, I got the odd guy next door to model the cap for me. It's very comfortable. I note that the brim is a little larger than most, and constructed as floppy, rather than stiff.
As for colour, I reckon red with a black stripe down the middle.

Adrian, r we going for the one Huw is modeling? I thought they were a little smaller and designed not for warmth but to wick away sweat?
"I note that the brim is a little larger than most, and constructed as floppy, rather than stiff".
will such an item do the job of wicking sweat away?

Cotton and woolen would be good for cold winter rides. As we all know, cotton material has a saturation limit. Once reached, it can be outright annoying. If you want something good for wicking sweat away, try a bandana made of Coolmax or similar modern material. I would recommend Halo (haloheadband.com) and Burwood Cycleworld stocks them or try eBay.
I think Huw is best to answer this and I'm not sure if his hat is wool or cotton.Adrian, r we going for the one Huw is modeling? I thought they were a little smaller and designed not for warmth but to wick away sweat?

Oh crap, I was hoping to order a cotton cap. I guess I only check these threads occasionally. Adrian, Is it too late to alter the order?
Did you know that, back in the day, one of the benefits of wearing a cap was having ready access to some kind of wipe in case you were in sudden need of the thunderbox?
I can vouch that cotton caps work well to remove sweat from your brow - once the brim is saturated, the sweat drips from the tip of the brim - much better than running into your eyes.
